    5 Workout tips for Full Time Mothers

    Tip #1: Go easy on yourself.

    With a few small tweaks, I managed to iron out my schedule to get more things done. Like many moms, I’ve had the need to make sacrifices. For me, it’s following my body’s signals, which mostly consist of changing my exercise, and eating healthier.

    TIP 2: Find something that you can fit in.

    You don’t need to exhaust yourselves on a free Saturday. Let's aim for 30 minutes of moderate (five pound dumbbells), strength training, 3-5 times a week. 2-3 times a week is also great, but try to stick to one of those with five pound dumbbells or fewer. When you pick out a playlist, ensure it’s something your kids can listen to a couple times.

    TIP 3: Make cardio fun.

    If you hate doing spin, or using a treadmill, dance like nobody is watching! Cardio is up to you. My 5 y.o wants to run with me, and has eagerly followed me on several weekly runs. I’d give myself an extra half hour (or less) if it meant she still did it once in a while, even if the intent was just to go for a walk.

    TIP 4: Include your tribe.

    Make sure it’s something the entire family can handle, like running, swimming, dancing, or trailing the neighborhood park.

    TIP 5: Train smart.

    We forget to take breaks, have outdated equipment at home, or simply aren’t as focused as we used to be before kids came along. But the worst thing you can do when trying to incorporate exercise into your down-time is to hike up a mountain or do an intense yoga session. It’s not an effective use of your limited time and energy, and you risk injury, burnout, or some other unforeseen consequence.
